Solar grid tie systems

Solar grid tie systems are used by people who realize the advantages to having their solar electricity systems hooked up to the local power grid. Because it can be somewhat lucrative to tie a solar energy system to a local grid, more and more people are doing it. However, if the connection of the solar energy system to the grid isn’t done correctly, serious problems and health risks could occur.

Because these risks exist, there are certain processes that should be followed and certain items that should be used to ensure safety and minimize risk. Among other items, some of the things that can help keep things safe are:

• Surge protectors – Surge protectors are simple devices, but very helpful. They are most useful when something drastic happens to the system. For example, if lightning hits a solar energy system or power lines (for those systems connected to a grid), the surge protector is designed to be able to prevent major electrical problems.

• Grounding gear – Those who will come into contact with solar grid tie systems need to understand the importance of grounding. Grounding helps a system resist charges from natural occurrences like lightning. It can also protect against electrical equipment complications. This gear could prove to be a life saver.

• Safety disconnects – It is important to have the opportunity to work on the solar grid tie systems from time to time when a maintenance issue presents itself. Safety disconnects help a person do this while maintaining a high level of safety. Being able to work on the system while it is not a part of the grid is vital for the safety of anybody who could be working on or around the system.
